Hungarian numbers can take the suffixes -os, -as, -es, -ös.

Question word: Hányas? – What number?

Distributive numbers can only be formed after fitting numbers with -os, -as, -es, -ös: hatosával, nyolcasával, négyesével, ötösével. If we add these suffixes to multiplicative numbers, they become adjectives:

Numbers with -os, -as, -es, -ös can be made plural: egyesek, kettesek, hármasok, négyesek, ötösök, hatosok, hetesek, nyolcasok, kilencesek, tízesek, etc. You can put them in plural when you count your coins:

Hat huszasom, két százasom és tizenöt ötvenesem van. – I’ve got six twenty, two hundred and fifteen fifty forint coins.

DECIMAL NUMBERS – TIZEDES SZÁMOK

Hungarian decimal numbers are written with a comma (vessző) instead of a point. When saying them, you use the word egész! Besides, you don’t just say the numbers one after the other. You have to refer them in a specific way.

Numerals – Fractions, Distributive, Multiplicative

FRACTIONS – TÖRT SZÁMOK

Fractions are numbers expressing a specific part of the whole. Hungarian fractions are formed with the suffix -d, which can have a link vowel if needed. So the suffixes in details are:

-AD, -OD, -ED, -ÖD

DISTRIBUTIVE NUMBERS

Hungarian distributive numbers are expressed with the suffixes -VAL, -VEL or -NKÉNT. If you’re all for cases, the suffix -nként marks the DISTRIBUTIVE CASE. Question word: Hányasával?

egyesével > one by one
kettesével > two at a time
százával > hundreds of
ezrével > thousands of

Hármasával vehettek az ebédből.
You can take from the lunch three at a time.

Százával, sőt ezrével tiltakoztak az emberek.
Hundreds, even thousands of people were protesting.

MULTIPLICATIVE NUMBERS

Hungarian multiplicative numbers are formed with the suffixes: -SZOR, -SZER, -SZÖR. English equivalent: times.

Question word: Hányszor? Milyen gyakran? – How many times? How often?

kétszer > twice
háromszor > three times
négyszer > four times
sokszor > many times
kevésszer > a few times

Ha csak egyszer érteném, amit mondasz!
If I understood just once what you say!

Numerals – Ordinal Numbers

ORDINAL NUMBERS – SORSZÁMOK

Ordinal numbers specify where something, somebody belongs to. English adds -th to form these numbers. Hungarian has the suffix –ik for that purpose when writing numbers in words. However, when numbers are written in figures, they are followed by a dot.

Hungarian: ötödik > 5.
English: fifth > 5th

Higher numbers: ezer – ezredik (drop-vowel word!); millió – milliomodik; sokadik – umpteenth

You’ve surely realized the suffix -ik is preceded by a link vowel + d consonant. Well, it is due to the fact that Hungarian ordinal numbers are formed from fractions. The suffixes for ordinal numbers are:

-adik, -odik, -edik, -ödik

Question word: Hányadik? = What/Which number?

This question word is the same in Hungarian, but many times different in English.

Hányadik lettél az autóversenyben?
At which place did you finish the car race?

Hányadikba jársz?
Which class are you attending?

The question hányadik is not to be confused with hányadék, meaning icky, barf-out! 🙂

Numerals – Cardinal Numbers

CARDINAL NUMBERS – TŐSZÁMOK

Number 0 can be said as: nulla or zéró. You can just say nulla whenever this number comes up.

The tens are formed with tizen + a number. They are written together. Example:

tizen + egy = tizenegy = eleven
tizen + kilenc = tizenkilenc = nineteen

The tens are formed irregularly, or most of them with the suffixes -van, -ven:

Compound numbers are formed similary to tizen- + a number.

huszon = twenty-
harminc = thirty-

Be careful about these numbers: tíz, húsz, három, négy, hét. Három is a drop-vowel word! The rest becomes short when above 10: tizen, huszon, harminc, negyven, hetven. Be particularly careful about húsz because it becomes huszon with another number: huszonhét = twenty-seven. More examples:

Let’s see the numbers above 100. When writing the numbers, there is a space between every thousand unit:

Question words for cardinal numbers: Hány? Mennyi?

Besides, the number 2 has two different forms: kettő, két-. Kettő is used as the usual number. Két- is something like a prefix and it is also used in adjectival sense.

hatvankettő = sixty-two
hatvankét ember = sixty-two people
kétezer = two thousand

However, két is often understood hét because of their similarity in everyday language. In this case kettő can be used when két- should be: hatvankettő ember, kettőezer.

CARDINALS NUMBERS MARKED WITH SUFFIXES

Cardinal numbers can take a couple of suffixes.

1. They take -AN, -EN when referring to a certain amount of people. In this case, the verb is always in the 3rd person plural form.

egy – egyedül > EXCEPTION! It is not egyen.
két – ketten > é becomes e
három – hárman > o is omitted, drop-vowel word
négy – négyen
öt – öten
hat – hatan
hét – heten > é becomes e
nyolc – nyolcan
kilenc – kilencen
tíz – tizen > í becomes i
száz – százan
ezer – ezren > second e is omitted, drop-vowel word
millió – millióan

Ketten voltak csak az állomáson.
There were only two people at the station.

Hatan támadták meg a fiatal lányt.
Six people attacked the young girl.

Háromezren várták a bolt nyitását.
Three thousand people were waiting for the opening of the shop.

Két millióan váltottak Internet szolgáltatót.
Two million people have changed their Internet provider.

The other possibilities for száz, ezer and millió is the -NYI suffix or the TÖBB + -AN, -EN adverb. The -NYI suffix is different because it does not require the verb to be in the plural.

Több százan/ezren/millióan nem kaptak fizetést.
Hundreds/Thousands/Millions of people didn’t get their paycheck.

Ezernyi/Milliónyi méh pusztult el a vegyszerek miatt.
Thousands/Millions of bees have perished due to the chemicals.

Note that -nyi cannot be added to száz. No explanation. We don’t use it. It sounds kind of wierd.

2. They can take the POSSESSIVE SUFFIXES. The rules are the same: hét and tíz become short het- and tiz-. Három and ezer are drop-vowel words, so they become hárm-, ezr-. Kettő does not change in this case. With egy we’d rather use the subject + -nak, -nek instead of adding the possessive suffixes. The rest can take additionally the -nak, -nek suffixes if the verb requires them.

Egy gyermeknek nem adtak ebédet.
They didn’t give lunch to one child.

Kettőnk miatt ne maradj itt.
Don’t stay here because of the two of us.

Hármotoknak nem kell új személyi igazolvány.
The three of you don’t need a new ID card.

Négyünk látta, hogy mi történt.
The four of us saw what happened.

Always pay attention to how you translate a sentence. Many times Hungarian needs -nak, -nek, but English is transitive or reversed: hármotoknak nem kell – the three of you don’t need (literally: for the three of you it is not a must…)

3. They take the accusative case -T if necessary.

Tíz utas volt a buszon. Most csak hármat látok.
There were ten passengers on the bus. Now I can see only three of them.

Veszek neked tíz ruhát, akár ezret is.
I’m going to buy you ten clothes, even a thousand.

4. Apart from the above-mentioned examples, cardinal numbers can take any suffix the context or the verb requires.

Öt fiókos a szekrény. Háromban ruha van.
The wardrobe has five drawers. Three has clothes in them.

Egy millió forintért bármit megtennék. Kétezerért biztosan nem.
I would do anything for a million forints. For two thousand, surely not.

MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSIONS

Raising a number to nth power is done with cardinal numbers, as for the first member. The second number raised to power take the suffixes -odik, -adik, -edik, -ödik + -on, -en.

Kettő a másodikon az négy. – Two to the second power is four.
Három a tizediken az ötvenkilencezer negyvenkilenc. – Three to the tenth power is 59049.

hatvány – power; hatványra emel – to raise to power; -dik hatványra emel – to raise to nth power

 

Time, Date and Century

TELLING THE TIME

The Hungarian word for time is: idő which also means weather. Another word for weather is időjárás.

Egy óra van. – It’s one o’clock.
Két óra van. – It’s two o’clock.
Dél van. – It’s noon.
Éjfél van. – It’s midnight.

You see it’s simple to say the time in Hungarian. But what if you want to say: five past ten, etc. Here’s the solution:

negyed négy – quarter past three
(literally: quarter four)

fél négy – half past three (literally: half four)

háromnegyed négy – quarter to four
(literally: three-quarter four)

If 15 minutes have passed after three o’clock, it means that it’s only a quarter part of fourth hour (am and pm, too). That’s why we say: negyed négy, and so on…

Examples:

Hány óra van? – What time is it?
Mennyi az idő? – What’s the time?
Egy óra van. – It’s one o’clock.
Negyed kettő van. – It’s quarter past one.
Fél kettő van. – It’s half past one.
Háromnegyed kettő van. – It’s quarter to two.
Két óra van. – It’s two o’clock.
Negyed négy van. – It’s quarter past three.
Fél tíz van. – It’s half past nine.
Háromnegyed hat van. – It’s quarter to six.
Hány órakor? Mikor? – At what time? When?
egykor – at one
hétkor – at seven
fél ötkor – at half past four
Negyed nyolc után tíz perccel. – at twenty-five past seven
Tíz óra elmúlt. – It’s past ten.
Öt perc múlva három. – It’s five to three.
Mikorra? Ötre. – By what time? By five.

STATING A DATE

Let’s see a comparison now! The example is:

25th February, 1992 or February 25th 1992

1. 1992. február 25.
2. 1992. feb. 25.
3. 1992. 02. 25.
4. 1992. II. 25.

1. You can state a date by writing out the month.
2. You can state a date by writing the abbreviation of the month.
3. You can state a date by writing everything in numbers.
4. You can state a date by writing the month in Roman letters, but it’s rarely used!

All members of a date are followed by a dot. An exception is a completely written out month. And the most important thing of all:

Hungarian dating goes from the bigger unit to the smaller unit.

YEAR + MONTH + DAY

If you want to say in 1992, use the suffixes –ban, -ben with a hyphen:

1992-ben, 2008-ban

Use the suffixes -án, -én with a hyphen if you want to say for example: 2005. május 5.-én.

2005. május 5-én összeházasodunk.
We’ll get married on 5th May, 2005.

Dates are said like this:

1995. 01. 06. = ezerkilencszázkilencvenöt január hatodika
1995. 01. 06-án = ezerkilencszázkilencvenöt január hatodikán
2017. 04. 05. = kétezertizenhét április ötödike
2017. 04. 05-én = kétezertizenhét április ötödikén
2017. 12. 07. = kétezertizenhét április hetedike
2017. 12. 07-én = kétezertizenhét április hetedikén

Furthermore, there’s a little trouble with the number ONE. If you say ’1st May’, you have to use the word: elseje, elsején.

1st May = május elseje
on 1st May = május elsején

Note that the Hungarian word óra has different aspects in English: hour, clock, watch. Everything is óra in Hungarian! 🙂

Words for óra:

villanyóra – electricity meter
vízóra – water-meter
gázóra – gas-meter

It also means class, lesson:

Hétkor órám van. – I have class at seven.
Órán vagyok. – I’m in a class.

Other examples:

Ma 2005. június 16. csütörtök van.
Today is Thursday 16th June, 2005.

Hányadika van ma?
What is the date today? What date is it today?

Mikor? – When?

Melyik évben? 1990-ben.
(In) which year? In 1990.

májusban – in May

1990 májusában – in May, 1990

Mettől meddig? Hétfőtől szombatig.
For how long?/From when to when? From Monday to Saturday.

Mennyi ideig? Hat napig.
(for) How long? For six days.

Mióta? 1990 óta.
Since when? Since 1990.

-Mióta vagy itt? -2 hete.
-How long have you been here? -For 2 weeks.

NOTE! Hungarian says 1995 as: a thousand-ninehundred-ninety-five. We don’t use the English method: nineteen ninetyfive!

CENTURY

Hungarian equivalent: század or évszázad.

a 16. század (tizenhatodik) – the 16th century
a 20. század (huszadik) – the 20th century
a 21. század (huszonegyedik) – the 21st century

Seasons and Holidays

SEASONS

The word for season is évszak, the plural is évszakok.

Évszakok: tél (winter), tavasz (spring), nyár (summer), ősz (autumn, fall). They want -val, -vel or -en, -on badly!

télen – in winter
nyáron – in summer
tavasszal – in spring
ősszel – in autumn

telente/minden télen – every winter
nyaranta/minden nyáron – every summer
minden tavasszal – every spring
minden ősszel – every autumn

HOLIDAY, FEAST

Hungarian uses the word: ünnep and the plural is ünnepek.

karácsonykor – at Christmas
húsvétkor – at Easter
Anyák napján – on Mother’s Day
születésnapon – on birthday
a születésnapomon – on my birthday
névnapomon – on my name-day

Note that Hungarian does not write these words in capital letters. Perhaps it’s more polite to write ”Anyák napja” like that, but it is not mandatory.

And the verb formed from ünnep is: (meg)ünnepel = to celebrate

-Mit ünneplünk? –A születésnapomat ünnepeljük.
-What are we celebrating? –We’re celebrating my birthday.

Megünnepeltem, hogy leérettségiztem.
I celebrated my graduation from high-school.

Date and Time with Month, Days and Periods

DATE AND TIME

napok (days), hónapok (months), évek (years), óra-órák (hours), percek (minutes), másodpercek (seconds), évtizedek (decades), évszázadok (centuries), évezredek (millennia), pillanatok (moments)

Month

Month is hónap in Hungarian and the plural is hónapok.

Hónapok: január, február, március, április, május, június, július, augusztus, szeptember, október, november, december

If you want to say ’in February, in November’, use the suffixes -ban, -ben: februárban, novemberben. Note that Hungarian writes months in lower-case.

Days

Day is nap in Hungarian and the plural is napok.

Napok: hétfő, kedd, szerda, csütörtök, péntek, szombat, vasárnap

If you want to say ’on Monday, on Tuesday’, use the suffixes -n, -on, -en, -ön: hétfőn, kedden. Exception to this rule is vasárnap, which is a noun and an adverb at the same time: on Sunday – vasárnap!

If you want to say ’on Mondays/every Monday’, use the suffixes -n, -on, -en, -ön + -ként: hétfőnként, szerdánként. In this case vasárnap takes the suffixes, too: vasárnaponként! Or just say: minden hétfőn, minden vasárnap, minden pénteken…

ma (today), holnap (tomorrow), tegnap (yesterday), holnapután (the day after tomorrow), tegnapelőtt (the day before yesterday)

ma reggel/este (this morning/evening), holnap délután (tomorrow in the afternoon), jövőre (next year), tavaly (last year), múlt héten (last week), hétvége > hétvégén (weekend > at weekend) hétköznap (on weekday)

Periods

Period has a couple of meanings in Hungarian. Now you need the words napszak and the plural is napszakok.

Napszakok: reggel (morning), délelőtt (morning), nappal (day-time), dél (noon), délután (afternoon), este (evening), éjszaka (night), éjfél (midnight), hajnal (dawn)

Some periods of the day can be a noun and an adverb of time in one, some can’t. The underlined part indicates the ones that require suffixes.

reggel – morning / in the morning
délelőtt – morning / in the morning
nappal – day-time / in the day-time
dél > délben – noon > at noon
délután – afternoon / in the afternoon
este – evening / in the evening
éjszaka – night / at night
éjfél > éjfélkor– midnight > at midnight
hajnal > hajnalban – dawn > at dawn

If you want to say ’I had a great time on this evening’, use -n, -on, -en, -ön:

Jól éreztem magam ezen az estén.

And another thing: this very morning = még ma reggel; this very day = még ma

NOTE!

The words délelőtt and reggel are translated into one word in English: morning. Délelőtt literally means before noon. Reggel refers more to period from the beginning of the morning to about eight/nine o’clock.
